Reuben Hot Dogs & Southern Baked Beans with Bacon | Homeschool Cooking Class

Check out the video of me teaching my girl's to cook. 😊

Today in our Homeschool Cooking Class, Paige found Daddy's favorite sandwich in a hotdog...Reuben Hotdogs. To compliment it I found the best beans I've ever had, Southern Baked Beans with Bacon.

My husband got me hooked on Reuben sandwiches' so when Paige found these Reuben hotdogs I was so stoked. I found this shaved deli pastrami that was amazing, its a step above regular sliced deli pastrami. We heated it up before putting in on the dogs. 😋 I discovered how much I like sauerkraut. It was never I big thing in my house, I had had it a couple time on Reuben sandwiches but never at home. I got to teach my girls a handy little hack. The sauerkraut needed to be warmed so I put some on a piece of tinfoil and wrapped it up in a ball and threw it on the baking sheet with the pastrami so they cooked together.

I have used my Instapot for years to cook bacon. I know that sounds funny but we needed bacon chucks for the beans, so I pre-cook it and cut down the baking time. Let that cook while we finished getting the beans put together. We added the bacon to the casserole dish with the beans just before putting it in the oven. Only had to cook for 40 minutes verse the 1-1 1/2 hours the recipe calls for. Of course I pured all the melted bacon fat into the beans as well. Cuz you know we wouldn't want any of that deliciousness to go to waste!

I love seeing recipes use liquid smoke. I've been using it for years and years and it just adds a special zing to whatever your making. If you've never tried it, I recommend it. This recipe also calls for bbq sauce and we are Sweet Baby Ray's fans, it's a regular in our house. It's just got good flavor, it went really well in these beans. This is a recipe I'll be making again. It was so good. I don't know if I can have baked bean any other way every again. How great is it though that we are trying so many recipes?! I mean my kids are learning a wide verity of foods. And foods they've had before the are having made differently. I know Paige is loving it. Paisley loves all the sweets we are having. I've never let them eat so much junk food. At least it's homemade.

Don't forget to check out the video, 👇🏼at the end of the post,

of me teaching my daughters' to cook these recipes.

You'll laugh, 🤣 I promise.

Most of the time the recipes are borrowed and used in the video., at the bottom of this post, to teach my daughters’ to cook. The photos are mine and I change things according to what we did in the video. I post it here for the viewers convenience and encourage you to check out the author, they have more insight on the recipe and lots of other recipes to share. Thank you, Penne 💕

Below are the recipes, the way they worked for us.

Ingredients

Instructions

  1. Cook bacon wrapped hotdog the way you chose. We chose to cook them on the Traeger.

  2. Heat pastrami and sauerkraut. Since we used the shaved pastrami, we put it on a baking sheet and baked it for 15 minute. Also put the sauerkraut in a tinfoil ball and threw it on the sheet with the pastrami.

  3. Toast buns. We like adding a little butter inside them during toasting!

  4. Once sauerkraut has been warmed, mix in thousand island.

  5. In each toasted hotdog bun, place one piece of cheese, cut in halve.

  6. Next add a hotdog and top that with ounce of pastrami and a heaping spoonful of sauerkraut mixture.

Ingredients

Instructions

  1. Combine ketchup, barbeque sauce, brown sugar, mustard, worcestershire sauce, Liquid Smoke, garlic and pepper in a medium-sized bowl then mix well; set aside.

  2. Open each can of beans and pour off all the standing liquid in the top of the can. Discard liquid then add beans to the ketchup mixture. Mix beans gently with the ketchup mixture until thoroughly combined then pour into a shallow 2-quart baking dish.

  3. Cut bacon into 1/2 inch pieces then place pieces evenly in a single layer on top of beans. I like to kinda crumple each piece a bit instead of laying them flat.

  4. Bake beans, uncovered, at 350 degrees for 1 to 1.5 hours or until bacon is cooked through and starting to crisp.
