I talk about Paisley's obsession with sourdough in an earlier video that we did, Sourdough pop tarts. And yes they were amazing. We were at my mom's house which was fitting because her bestie is the one that taught Paisley about Sourdough buttermilk biscuits. I'm lazy and made them muffins. I am just joyous that we know how to do this now. I could eat them everyday. Nanny Jo, my mom's bestie, would make them every other day when she was at my house and I came home the hospital. Mmmmm honey and butter. Oh and we discovered a topping that is to dye for, Nutella!

Cooking at my mom's was interesting. Not having my stuff or the useful products I have, meant I had to either go back to the basics or improvise with her stuff. Good training for Paisley though. The more you know how to go with the flow, the easier things are. I did remember to bring Paisley's sourdough cookbook (printed it 1977!) and her sourdough starter. I got her a cool little jar for it.

From the book, a basic sourdough starter is:

2 cups all-purpose flour

1 teaspoon salt

3 tablespoons sugar

1 tablespoon dry yeast

2 cups lukewarm water

"There are two ways to obtain a sourdough starter: By mixing the simple ingredients together yourself or by obtaining a gift of starter from a friend or family member. The older the starter, the more tangy the flavor. I have used both new and "aged' starters with success."

You feed your starter the day before using it. How much starter you need in the recipe, that's how much you feed it. So if it needs a cup, you feed it a cup of water and a cup of flour. Leave it out over night and by morning it should be bubbling. If it's not, Nanny Jo told me to sprinkle a little yeast in it. Put it back in the fridge after you use the measurement you need in your recipe.

Paisley likes to remind me every time we use her sourdough how to tell if your started has gone bad. If its black or brown, it's fine. If it's orange, it's turned on you. It's good to stir every now and again. As long as your using and feeding it, it should be ok. I was reading more about it and some people for passed it down to their kids! It is such a cool thing to have with your kids. I like plants and my grandma gave me clippings of her pathos and so now I have a piece of her plant growing. My mom, sister, aunt, sister-in-law and aunt-in-law have all given me clippings. It's so special to pieces of their plants growing in my house. Sourdough I feel is similar. Only Paisley will be passing starter onto to me when she moves out. 🤣
